The USD Hockey Hall of Fame is a place where players and
former players gather to talk about the players who made the biggest difference in our
program. Currently we have four members in the hall.
Marcus Daniels
Marcus got the whole program started. He's the reason that there is a team
today.
"My best memory of Marcus is the fact
that he kept me in hockey. I was just learning how to play and was really
frustrated. He said that I should try playing goalie, since the team really needed
one. I tried it, loved it and now I play five to six times a week. He really
showed me how important college activities are. He said that USD Hockey made his
college career, and it has done the same for me."
Matt Geiszler
"Marcus would sometimes play a 'chew'
in his mouth, after he had whacked off many times to the Spice Channel."
Jared Machado
"I remember when Marcus scored 2 goals
in the final minute to tie in a tournament game and put us into overtime and we eventually
won the game. He was a pure scorer around the net. He also was so dedicated that he never
wanted to end practice even when they would turn the lights out on him. If he could have
played all night over at RHI he would have."
Jeff Haug
"The best motivator we ever had. Also
had the uncanny ability to carry on a conversation after 12 beers and a huge fatty of
Copenhagen in his lip."
Tim Kenney
"Marcus and I would try to kill each
other in practice. Hockey was always full contact when we played against each other."
Jeff Collins
"Marcus is the badass that smokes five bowls before a game and talks shit."
Tom Lamey
"Marcus was the king of motivation. my
freshman year, we had Dave Dunlop on the team and he worked at the shit
hole rink where we practiced (RHI). Dave wan in charge of closing the rink.
because of this, we could practice as late
as Dave would let us. we began practices at 10:30 pm, and were supposed
to
be off by 11:30. so we usually practiced until about 1am. We did
this because if
anyone tried to leave, Marcus would start telling them to take their skirt off, or where are you
going you pussy, etc... no one wanted to leave because Marcus would get so
pissed. Most of the time, we practiced until
we were falling down from exhaustion. After Marcus realized we couldn't possibly play anymore, he
would always say "just one more goal." The
one more goal meant practice would be ending in about 20 minutes.
Marcus loved to play the game, and
him and Haug were lethal on the ice. Marcus
was admired by all, and I'm glad to say I know him."
John Lamey
Andy Grusch
Andy was the second half of the founding fathers. He helped start the whole
thing.
"I didn't meet Andy until after he
graduated, so I never got to see him in any real action. However, after he and Tim
thrashed me in the Alumni Game in 1999, we went back to Tim's, got smashed, and partied at
Buffalo Joe's. We ended up sitting on the street in front of Tim's house at four in
the morning, listening to Sublime. It was one of the funnest nights of my life"
Matt Geiszler
"Andy taught me a thing or two about
defense."
Jared Machado
"Andy Grush should get most of the
credit for starting the USD hockey team in 1994. He saw me at O week with a hockey shirt
on and told me he was going to try and start a team. In our first year we came out of
nowhere to beat most teams in California. Andy Grush has to be the best defensemen in USD
history. He always had the eye for a great pass in the middle and he was very good in the
offensive zone and a great puck handler."
Jeff Haug
"Could control a game whenever he
wanted. I remember we were
getting killed in a game against professionals playing for El Camino. We hardly even
touched the puck the first half of the game. At the start of the 3rd period he took the
puck from behind our goal and deaked every member of their team at least twice and rang a
shot off the post. "What the hell was that?" I asked him when we got back to the
bench. He replied, "Just wanted to make sure I still had it."
Also the smelliest hockey equipment I have ever encountered."
Tim Kenney
"Talented player. Made hockey look
easy."
Jeff Collins
"Andy was not only a great hockey
player, he was also such a badass both on and
off the rink. The story that best paints a picture of Andy is this:
My sophomore year,
all of a sudden the national anthem started to bellow through the upper part of campus. Haug and I
were sitting in our apartment, having a cold
one, and walked down the hall to check it out. Outside in the patio area was Andy Grush, electric guitar in
hand, sunglasses, with a crowd of hot
chicks around him. The amp was on high, and Grush was ripping the Jimi
Hendrix
version of the national anthem, for no reason! But it just didn't matter, Grush was the man on campus, he
did whatever he wanted."
John Lamey
John Lamey
John ran the show from 1996-1998. He always made sure that we showed up and
played our hearts out.
"At the regional tournament in 1997,
we were playing UNLV. One of their players was getting away with constant cross
checks. He hit John in the back, and John lashed his stick out and hit the guy right
in the face. He split the guy open, and the UNLV guy got a penaly for cross
checking. It was one of the funniest things I ever saw."
Matt Geiszler
"Lamey stood five foot five inches but
played and hit like he was six
foot four inches."
Jared Machado
"This guy would always give it is
hardest at all times. He would
steal the puck away from the defensemen and then put it in the top shelf so many times. He
had that wrist shot to the upper corner down to a science. He was one of the reasons the
team kept on going after Grush, Marcus and those guys were gone because of his
organization skills."
Jeff Haug
"The best hustler I have ever played
with. Also had the most exposed
skin (no jersey, socks, sweats etc.)."
Tim Kenney
"Always gave 100%. Tried to hit him
once in an alumni game and he
put me on my back."
Jeff Collins
"John is the guy who got me involved
w/ roller. I don't know if I should beat him for that or what."
Tom Lamey
Jeff Haug
While Jeff never had an official leadership role with the team, he was without a
doubt one of the best hockey players any of us ever saw. He was clutch, and clutch
is everything.
"My first time ever playing goal, Jeff
comes to practice drunk. The guy had a monster shot, and when he was drunk, there
was no way he could control it. He wound up and fired about two feet in front of me
and drilled me right in the head. My head hurt for a week. I'm surprised that
I kept playing after that kind of initiation."
Matt Geiszler
"Haug used the patented 'outside
move' almost every play and no matter if you knew it was coming, he would still beat
you with it."
Jared Machado
"No one could ever get the puck from
him. Saw him go end to end more times than I can count. Also had a divine gift from God to
actually play better the morning after the more he drank the night before."
Tim Kenney
"Pure goal scorer. Always found the
back of the net."
Jeff Collins
"Haug is the guy who can drink 8 beers
before practice, and score ten goals. I have one beer and still suck it up. Go
figure."
Tom Lamey
"Haug scoring the tying goal with 1
second left in fall of 1996 to send us to shootouts. Fat old school tournament. He got
elected to the all star team that year and beat the shit out of someone in front of the
net."
Ben
Erickson
"Jeff was a pure goal scorer.
Great shot and great stick handler. Hauger was one
of my best friends in college so I have many stories with this guy I don't know where to start. One of my
most favorite moments with Hauger was a trip
to Las Vegas our freshman year. We both were rolling around the casino
fuzzed
and playing roulette. After we lost our cash, we just walked around
drinking
for free. We ran into Marcus and he was up \$1000, Tom Layne up $400, and Thad up a nominal amount.
Marcus was bragging that he was a high roller and couldn't lose. He was really
drunk and had the proverbial chew in his
upper lip. After a while, Hauger and I went back to the hotel at 3am with Collins, Jeff Spickler, and
others. we were just sitting around chillin'
watching some porn. An hour later, Tom Layne, Marcus, and Thad come
barging
through the door. (we only got one room for 11 guys). Marcus and Tom
Layne were just screaming and swearing.
Marcus was yelling I hate this fucking
town, and Layne was uttering similar pleasantries. It turned out Marcus had a change of luck, lost the
\$1000 plus another $400, and Layne was now down $200. Marcus was throwing shit
and I thought for sure we were getting
kicked out. Jeff Collins was all over Marcus saying, "What happened
to
the high roller? Not such a high roller any more eh?" Marcus was
so pissed he decided
to drive back with Thad and Tom to San Diego at about 5am."
